2008 is our 104th Anniversary. Gerth's was founded in Wyaconda, Missouri, in 1904. Gerth's is one of the oldest and most respected firms in Northeast Missouri. That's because Fred Gerth Sr., had a simple philosophy when he founded the business: provide a professional service and quality merchandise at an affordable price. And for 104 years, through three generations of Gerths, that is what we have done.
Gerth's is composed of two businesses: Gerth & Baskett Furniture and Gerth Funeral Service. A funeral home and furniture store may seem like an odd combination today, but a hundred years ago it was common in the small towns in the Midwest for an undertaker to also operate a furniture or hardware store. The reason is because the furniture manufacturers also made the caskets. We are one of the few businesses in the United States that still operate a funeral home/furniture store combination. So in May of 1904, Fred Gerth opened his Undertaking, Furniture, and Piano business in Wyaconda, MO. His longtime partner, and brother-in-law, George V. Baskett joined him in 1912 and the rest is history. Through three generations of Gerths, we have survived on the basic principles installed in 1904 -- provide a professional service and quality merchandise at affordable prices.
